Juan Francisco Ochoa opened the first El Pollo Loco in Mexico in 1975. The 1st U.S. location opened in 1980 in Los Angeles. In 1983, the locations in the U.S. were sold to Denny’s and the locations in Mexico continued to be owned by the Ochoa family. Denny’s sold their ownership to a private equity firm in 1999. In July 2014, LOCO had its IPO. It was a hot stock that summer as investors thought it could be the next Chipotle’s. The stock touched $41.70 on August 1st, 2014.
